"Surly service ok food"

Mostly this review is about a wednesday lunch service but also draws on experience from two other visits.

Wednesday lunch - From the first encounter at the bar the staff set the visit off to a poor start. We thought seriously about aborting our visit and going elsewhere. As is often the case it was too difficult to rearrange our larger group. Chaotic service delivered in a surly manner by the bar staff. There were only two parties being served and three staff but still the process took an age. Including a period where customers were ignored while set up jobs like bar restocking were given priority. Perhaps they use more experienced/better trained staff at busier times?

The food was ok to mediocre.. Just 4 items to choose from on the menu or the carvery. The menu items were better than the carvery. Fish and chips great. Lasagne ok. Club sandwich ok. Carvey poor.

Carvery portions were not generous. We have used the carvery at Sunday lunch and the service was better and portions good to large. Usual 3 choices of meat and veg in butter/cheese coatings - not always the healthy option :-). Roast potatoes good - otherwise nothing special about this carvery showed through despite the grand claims to be best in England.

the restaurant ambience is nothing special and is canteen like at busy times. Larger tables have been squeezed in too tight with barely room for a plate.

Table waiting staff were friendly and helpful - well done to them.

Desert menu is imaginative and quality good.

Overall - average. Poor service and organisation. Food quality better than chain pubs but not "gastro". Pricing ok to expensive.

Other options nearby? Running horse (chef and brewer) - better service and menu, poor food quality. Foresters Arms (independent) better service food and ambience (we should have gone there instead).
